Kemi Badenoch, at 25, joined the Conservative Party in 2005. In 2010, she ran against Labour’s Tessa Jowell in the Dulwich and West Norwood constituency, finishing third behind Jowell and Jonathan Mitchell (the Liberal Democrat candidate).

She ran for the Conservatives in the London Assembly election in 2012, finishing sixth on the London-wide list. Victoria Borwick was elected to the House of Commons in the 2015 general election and later resigned her position in the London Assembly. Then Badenoch was named the new Assembly Member.
