The Narayana Kavacham occurs in chapter eight of the sixth skanda of Bhagavada Purana. It is an Armour to protect ourselves from our enemies seen and unseen. Raja Parikshith, the son of Abhimanyu, asks his teacher, Sage Shuka for a means to protect himself from his enemies. Sage Shuka then teaches him the Narayana Kavacham, which was originally taught by Sage Viswaroopa, the son of Thwashtra, to Indra. It is believed that the soul of the man who reads this Kavacha becomes extremely holy and that any one who reads this would be protected by Lord Vishnu. Just like in a battle one would wear body armour to be protected from the enemies, Shri Vishnu Bhagwan through this Narayan Kavach protects a soul from the all anomalies. यया गुप्तः सहस्त्राक्षः सवाहान् रिपुसैनिकान्।क्रीडन्निव विनिर्जित्य त्रिलोक्या बुभुजे श्रियम्।।१

भगवंस्तन्ममाख्याहि वर्म नारायणात्मकम्।यथाssततायिनः शत्रून् येन गुप्तोsजयन्मृधे।।२

॥રાજોવાચ॥

યયા ગુપ્તઃ સહસ્ત્રાક્ષઃ સવાહાન્ રિપુસૈનિકાન્। ક્રીડન્નિવ વિનિર્જિત્ય ત્રિલોક્યા બુભુજે શ્રિયમ્॥1॥

ભગવંસ્તન્મમાખ્યાહિ વર્મ નારાયણાત્મકમ્। યથાસ્સ્તતાયિનઃ શત્રૂન્ યેન ગુપ્તોસ્જયન્મૃધે॥2॥

પરીક્ષિત રાજાએ કહ્યું : હે મહારાજ – વિદ્યાથી રક્ષણ પામેલા ઇન્દ્ર દેવે રમત માત્રમાં સર્વસ્વનું હરણ કરનારા શત્રુઓની સેનાને યુદ્ધમાં જીતી લીધી અને ત્રેલોક્યનું રાજ્ય ભોગવ્યું તે ‘ નારાયણ કવચ ‘ રૂપ વિદ્યા મને કહો. સાથે એ પણ બતાવો કે તેને તેનાથી સુરક્ષિત થઈને રણભૂમિમાં કેવી રીતે આક્રમણકારી શત્રુઓ ઉપર વિજય મેળવ્યો. Oh God please share with me that armour of Narayana,By which the thousand eyed Indra was able to drive away,The well armed soldiers of his enemy as if it is a play,And gain control of the three worlds and wealth,And also was safe in the battle field and became victorious.

।।श्रीशुक उवाच।।

वृतः पुरोहितोस्त्वाष्ट्रो महेन्द्रायानुपृच्छते।नारायणाख्यं वर्माह तदिहैकमनाः शृणु।।३

॥શ્રીશુક ઉવાચ॥

વૃતઃ પુરોહિતોસ્ત્વાષ્ટ્રો મહેંદ્રાયાનુપૃચ્છતે। નારાયણાખ્યં વર્માહ તદિહૈકમનાઃ શૃણુ॥3॥

શ્રી શુકદેવજીએ કહ્યું : પુરોહિત બનેલા વિશ્વરૂપે પ્રશ્ન પૂછનાર ઇન્દ્ર દેવને જે નારાયણ કવચ કહેલું તર હવે એકાગ્ર મનથી સાંભળો.

विश्वरूप उवाचधौताङ्घ्रिपाणिराचम्य सपवित्र उदङ् मुखः।कृतस्वाङ्गकरन्यासो मन्त्राभ्यां वाग्यतः शुचिः।।४

नारायणमयं वर्म संनह्येद् भय आगते।पादयोर्जानुनोरूर्वोरूदरे हृद्यथोरसि।।५

मुखे शिरस्यानुपूर्व्यादोंकारादीनि विन्यसेत्।ॐ नमो नारायणायेति विपर्ययमथापि वा।।६

વિશ્વરૂપ ઉવાચધૌતાંઘ્રિપાણિરાચમ્ય સપવિત્ર ઉદઙ્ મુખઃ। કૃતસ્વાંગકરન્યાસો મંત્રાભ્યાં વાગ્યતઃ શુચિઃ॥4॥

નારાયણમયં વર્મ સંનહ્યેદ્ ભય આગતે। પાદયોર્જાનુનોરૂર્વોરૂદરે હૃદ્યથોરસિ॥5॥

મુખે શિરસ્યાનુપૂર્વ્યાદોંકારાદીનિ વિન્યસેત્। ઓં નમો નારાયણાયેતિ વિપર્યયમથાપિ વા॥6॥

વિશ્વરૂપે કહ્યું : હે દેવરાજ ઇન્દ્ર ! ભયનો પ્રસંગ આવી પડે ત્યારે નારાયણ કવચ ધારણ કરી પોતાના શરીરની રક્ષા કરી લેવી જોઈએ. એની વિધિ આ પ્રમાણે છે કે પહેલા હાથ પગ ધોઈ આચમન કરવું.પછી હાથમાં કુશની વીંટી ધારણ કરી ઉત્તર તરફ મુખ રાખી બેસી જવું. પછી કવચ ધારણ પર્યંત બીજું કાંઈ પણ ન બોલવાનો નિશ્ચય કરી પવિત્રતાથી ” ૐ નમો નારાયાણાય ” અને ” ૐ નમો ભગવતે વાસુદેવાય ” આ મંત્રો દ્વારા હૃદયાદી અંગ ન્યાસ તથા અંગૂષ્ઠાદિકર ન્યાસ કરવા. પહેલા ” ૐ નામો નારાયાણાય ” આ અષ્ટાક્ષર મંત્રના ૐ વગેરે આઠ અક્ષરોના ક્રમશઃ બે પગ, બે ગોઠણ,બે સાથળ,પેટ,હૃદય, વક્ષ સ્થળ, મુખ અને મસ્તકમાં ન્યાસ કરવા અથવા પૂર્વોક્ત મંત્રના ય કારથી શરૂ કરી ૐ કાર પર્યંત આઠ અક્ષરોના મસ્તકથી આરંભ કરી તે જ આઠ અંગોમાં ઉલટા ક્રમથી ન્યાસ કરવા.(4)(5)(6)

When fear approaches you, after washing your feet and hand,Do internal purification by achamana, wear the holy ring made of Durba,Face the north, sit on a seat of Durba grass and do the hand Symbols,And do holy chants and attain cleanliness of speech.You should then become silent, become engrossed in Narayana,And do suitable actions to tie yourself with the armour of Narayana,And using the eight letters starting with Om, touch the feet,Knees, thighs, belly heart chest, face and head,

करन्यासं ततः कुर्याद् द्वादशाक्षरविद्यया।प्रणवादियकारन्तमङ्गुल्यङ्गुष्ठपर्वसु।।७

કરન્યાસં તતઃ કુર્યાદ્ દ્વાદશાક્ષરવિદ્યયા। પ્રણવાદિયકારંતમંગુલ્યંગુષ્ઠપર્વસુ॥7॥

પછી ૐ નમો ભગવતે વાસુદેવાય એ દ્વાદશાક્ષર મંત્રના ૐ કારથી સંપુટ કરેલા એક એક અક્ષરનો આંગળીઓમાં અને અંગુઠાની અણીઓમાં ન્યાસ કરવો. જમણા હાથની તર્જની થી માંડી ડાબા હાથની તર્જની સુધીની આઠ આંગળીઓમાં આઠ અક્ષરોનો અને બે અંગુઠાના ઉપરના તથા નીચેના ચાર સાંધાઓમાં બાકી રહેલા ચાર અક્ષરોનો ન્યાસ કરવો.(7)

Then after touching the eight parts of the body,The feet, Knees, thighs, belly heart chest, face and head,Chanting the eight letter Manthra “Om Namo Narayanaya”Either in an ascending or descending order,You have to perform the knowledge of the twelve letters,

न्यसेद् हृदय ओङ्कारं विकारमनु मूर्धनि।षकारं तु भ्रुवोर्मध्ये णकारं शिखया दिशेत्।।८

वेकारं नेत्रयोर्युञ्ज्यान्नकारं सर्वसन्धिषु।मकारमस्त्रमुद्दिश्य मन्त्रमूर्तिर्भवेद् बुधः।।९

सविसर्गं फडन्तं तत् सर्वदिक्षु विनिर्दिशेत्।ॐ विष्णवे नम इति ।।१०

ન્યસેદ્ હૃદય ઓંકારં વિકારમનુ મૂર્ધનિ। ષકારં તુ ભ્રુવોર્મધ્યે ણકારં શિખયા દિશેત્॥8॥

વેકારં નેત્રયોર્યુંજ્યાન્નકારં સર્વસંધિષુ। મકારમસ્ત્રમુદ્દિશ્ય મંત્રમૂર્તિર્ભવેદ્ બુધઃ॥9॥

સવિસર્ગં ફડંતં તત્ સર્વદિક્ષુ વિનિર્દિશેત્। ઓં વિષ્ણવે નમ ઇતિ ॥10॥

પછી ” ૐ વિષણવે નમઃ ” એ મંત્રના “ૐ” કારનો હૃદયમાં, “વિ” કારનો મસ્તકમાં, “ષ” કારનો ભ્રકુટીના મધ્યમાં, “ણ” કારનો શીખામાં , “વે” કારનો બન્ને નેત્રમાં અને “ન” કારનો સર્વ સાંધાઓમાં ન્યાસ કરવો, બાકી રહેલા “મ” કારનો ૐ મહ્ અસ્ત્રાય ફટ કરી દિગબંધ જોડવો. આ પ્રમાણે ન્યાસ કરવાથી આ વિધિને જાણવાવાળો પુરુષ મંત્ર સ્વરૂપ થઈ જાય છે.(8)(9)(10)

Tell “Sha” and touch the middle of the eye brows,Tell “Na” and touch the top of the hair on your headTell “Ve” and touch both your eyes,Tell “Na” and touch all your joints,Facing all directions and say “Ma Asthraya Phat”,This would make even the dim witted in to a wise one,And thus you tie all the six directions as directed,And chant “Om salutations to Lord Vishnu”

आत्मानं परमं ध्यायेद ध्येयं षट्शक्तिभिर्युतम्।विद्यातेजस्तपोमूर्तिमिमं मन्त्रमुदाहरेत ।।११

આત્માનં પરમં ધ્યાયેદ ધ્યેયં ષટ્શક્તિભિર્યુતમ્। વિદ્યાતેજસ્તપોમૂર્તિમિમં મંત્રમુદાહરેત ॥11॥

ત્યાર પછી સમગ્ર ઐશ્વર્ય , ધર્મ, યશ, લક્ષ્મી, જ્ઞાન અને વૈરાગ્યથી પરિપૂર્ણ ઇષ્ટદેવ ભગવાનનું ધ્યાન કરવું અને પોતાને પણ તદ્રુપ જ સમજે. પછી વિદ્યા, તેજ અને તપ સ્વરૂપ આ કવચનો પાથ કરવો.(11)

Afterwards meditate on Athma supported by the six strengths,Of Wealth, charity, fame, goddess of wealth, wisdom and renunciation,And chant the following which has the form of knowledge, power and meditation.

ॐ हरिर्विदध्यान्मम सर्वरक्षां न्यस्ताङ्घ्रिपद्मः पतगेन्द्रपृष्ठे।दरारिचर्मासिगदेषुचापाशान् दधानोsष्टगुणोsष्टबाहुः ।।१२

ઓં હરિર્વિદધ્યાન્મમ સર્વરક્ષાં ન્યસ્તાંઘ્રિપદ્મઃ પતગેંદ્રપૃષ્ઠે। દરારિચર્માસિગદેષુચાપાશાન્ દધાનોસ્ષ્ટગુણોસ્ષ્ટબાહુઃ ॥12॥

જલેષુ માં રક્ષતુ મત્સ્યમૂર્તિર્યાદોગણેભ્યો વરૂણસ્ય પાશાત્। સ્થલેષુ માયાવટુવામનોસ્વ્યાત્ ત્રિવિક્રમઃ ખેઽવતુ વિશ્વરૂપઃ ॥13॥

ૐ ગરુડજીની પીઠ ઉપર ચરણ ધરીને રહેલા, અણિમાદિ આઠ સિધ્ધિઓથી સેવીત, આઠ બાહુ વાળા શંખ-ચક્ર-ઢાલ-તલવાર-ગદા-બાણ-ધનુષ અને પાશને ધારણ કરતા હરિ ભગવાન મારી સર્વ પ્રકારની રક્ષા કરજો.(12)

May all the protection to me be given by Hari,Who keeps his lotus feet on the back of the bird,Who is armed with conch, wheel, sword, mace,Bow and a rope and who has eight qualities and eight hands.

दुर्गेष्वटव्याजिमुखादिषु प्रभुः पायान्नृसिंहोऽसुरयुथपारिः।विमुञ्चतो यस्य महाट्टहासं दिशो विनेदुर्न्यपतंश्च गर्भाः ।।१४

દુર્ગેષ્વટવ્યાજિમુખાદિષુ પ્રભુઃ પાયાન્નૃસિંહોઽસુરયુથપારિઃ। વિમુંચતો યસ્ય મહાટ્ટહાસં દિશો વિનેદુર્ન્યપતંશ્ચ ગર્ભાઃ ॥14॥

કિલ્લા, વન તથા રણભૂમિ વગેરે સંકટમાં સ્થળોમાં મોટા દૈત્યોનાં સેના પતિઓના શત્રુ નૃસિંહ ભગવાન રક્ષા કરજો. એ ભગવાન જ્યારે મોટા શબ્દથી ખડખડ હસ્યાં હતા ત્યારે દિશાઓમાં ગર્જના ઉઠી હતી અને દૈત્ય પત્નીઓના ગર્ભો પડી ગયા હતાં.(14)

In forts, forests, dangerous places and in war,Let me be protected by Lord Narasimha,Who by his mighty roar shook all directions,Broke open the army formation of Asura,And caused pregnant asura Women to abort.

रक्षत्वसौ माध्वनि यज्ञकल्पः स्वदंष्ट्रयोन्नीतधरो वराहः।रामोऽद्रिकूटेष्वथ विप्रवासे सलक्ष्मणोsव्याद् भरताग्रजोsस्मान् ।।१५

રક્ષત્વસૌ માધ્વનિ યજ્ઞકલ્પઃ સ્વદંષ્ટ્રયોન્નીતધરો વરાહઃ। રામોઽદ્રિકૂટેષ્વથ વિપ્રવાસે સલક્ષ્મણોસ્વ્યાદ્ ભરતાગ્રજોસ્સ્માન્ ॥15॥

પોતાની દાઢ વડે પૃથ્વીને ધારણ કરનાર અને યજ્ઞોરૂપી અવ્યવ વાળા વરાહ ભગવાન માર્ગમાં રક્ષા કરજો. પર્વતોના શિખરો ઉપર પરશુરામ અને પ્રવાસમાં ભરતના મોટા ભાઈ રામચંદ્રજી લક્ષમણ સહિત મારી રક્ષા કરજો.(15)

Let me be protected on my way by Lord Varaha,Who is Yagna personified and who by his protruding teeth,Lifted and carried the earth to safety,Let me be protected on mountain top by Lord ParasuramaLet me be protected when I am abroad By Lord Rama,Who is elder brother of Bharatha and Lakshmana.

मामुग्रधर्मादखिलात् प्रमादान्नारायणः पातु नरश्च हासात्।दत्तस्त्वयोगादथ योगनाथः पायाद् गुणेशः कपिलः कर्मबन्धात् ।।१६

મામુગ્રધર્માદખિલાત્ પ્રમાદાન્નારાયણઃ પાતુ નરશ્ચ હાસાત્। દત્તસ્ત્વયોગાદથ યોગનાથઃ પાયાદ્ ગુણેશઃ કપિલઃ કર્મબંધાત્ ॥16॥

મારણ-મોહન આદિ ભયંકર અભિચારો અને ગફલતમાંથી નારાયણ રક્ષા કરજો. ગર્વથી નર ભગવાન, યોગ ભ્રંશથી યોગેશ્વર દત્તાત્રેય અને ગુણોના સ્વામી કપિલદેવજી કર્મના બંધનથી રક્ષા કરજો.(16)

Let me be protected by Lord Narayana,When I am transgressing Dharma or committing mistakes,Let me be protected from my pride by Sage Nara,Let me protected by Sage Dathathreya,For not engaging in Yoga, meditation and other activitiesAnd let sage Kapila protect me from the bondage of Karma.

सनत्कुमारो वतु कामदेवाद्धयशीर्षा मां पथि देवहेलनात्।देवर्षिवर्यः पुरूषार्चनान्तरात् कूर्मो हरिर्मां निरयादशेषात् ।।१७

સનત્કુમારો વતુ કામદેવાદ્ધયશીર્ષા માં પથિ દેવહેલનાત્। દેવર્ષિવર્યઃ પુરૂષાર્ચનાંતરાત્ કૂર્મો હરિર્માં નિરયાદશેષાત્ ॥17॥

ભગવાન સનતકુમારો કામદેવથી રક્ષા કરજો અને માર્ગમાં દેવોને નમસ્કાર ન કરવા રૂપી અપરાધથી હયગ્રીવ ભગવાન રક્ષા કરજો. નારદજી સેવામાં થતા અપરાધોથી રક્ષા કરજો.સર્વ પ્રકારના નરકથી કચ્છપાવતાર ભગવાન મારી રક્ષા કરજો.(17)

Let sage Sanath Kumara protect me from the cupid,Let Lord Hayagreeva protect me while I am on travel,As well as when I do action that insults the Devas,Let Sage Narada protect me from sins of non worship of devas,And let Hari who took the form of a tortoise,Protect me from different types of hell.

धन्वन्तरिर्भगवान् पात्वपथ्याद् द्वन्द्वाद् भयादृषभो निर्जितात्मा।यज्ञश्च लोकादवताज्जनान्ताद् बलो गणात् क्रोधवशादहीन्द्रः ।।१८

કૂપથ્યમાંથી ધન્વંતરિ રક્ષા કરજો. જિતેન્દ્રિય રૂષભદેવજી સુખ દુઃખ શીત ઉષ્ણ આદિ ભયંકર દ્વંદોથી રક્ષા કરજો. લોકપવાદથી યજ્ઞાવતાર રક્ષા કરજો. મનુષ્યકૃત વિધ્નોથી બળભદ્રજી રક્ષા કરજો. ક્રોધવશ નામના સર્પોના ગણથી શેષનાગ રક્ષા કરજો.(18)

ધન્વંતરિર્ભગવાન્ પાત્વપથ્યાદ્ દ્વંદ્વાદ્ ભયાદૃષભો નિર્જિતાત્મા। યજ્ઞશ્ચ લોકાદવતાજ્જનાંતાદ્ બલો ગણાત્ ક્રોધવશાદહીંદ્રઃ ॥18॥

Let Lord Dhanwanthari protect me from unsuitable food,Let Rishabha, the renounced soul protect me.From fear of the contradictory dualities,Let Sage Yajna protect me from gossip of society,Let Lord Balarama protect me from problems created by men,And let Adhi sesha protect me from my anger.

द्वैपायनो भगवानप्रबोधाद् बुद्धस्तु पाखण्डगणात् प्रमादात्।कल्किः कले कालमलात् प्रपातु धर्मावनायोरूकृतावतारः ।।१९

દ્વૈપાયનો ભગવાનપ્રબોધાદ્ બુદ્ધસ્તુ પાખંડગણાત્ પ્રમાદાત્। કલ્કિઃ કલે કાલમલાત્ પ્રપાતુ ધર્માવનાયોરૂકૃતાવતારઃ ॥19॥

અજ્ઞાનથી વેદવ્યાસ ભગવાન, પાંખડીઓથી અને પ્રમાદથી બુદ્ધાવતાર અને ધર્મ રક્ષાને માટે મહાન અવતાર ધારણ કરવાવાળા ભગવાન કલ્કિ પાપબહુલ કાલિકાલના દોષોથી મારી રક્ષા કરજો.(19)

Let Sage Vyasa protect me from lack of awakening,Let sage Budha protect me from hypocrisy and ignorance,Let Lord Kalki, who would be born to salvage Dharma,Protect me from the evil effects and thoughts of Kali age.

मां केशवो गदया प्रातरव्याद् गोविन्द आसङ्गवमात्तवेणुः।नारायण प्राह्ण उदात्तशक्तिर्मध्यन्दिने विष्णुररीन्द्रपाणिः ।।२०

માં કેશવો ગદયા પ્રાતરવ્યાદ્ ગોવિંદ આસંગવમાત્તવેણુઃ। નારાયણ પ્રાહ્ણ ઉદાત્તશક્તિર્મધ્યંદિને વિષ્ણુરરીંદ્રપાણિઃ ॥20॥

સવારમાં ગદાથી ભગવાન કેશવ, વેણુધારી ગોવિંદ ભગવાન થોડો દિવસ ચઢી આવે ત્યારે, બરછી-ધારી નારાયણ પૂર્વાહન કાળમાં અને ભગવાન વિષ્ણુ ચક્રરાજ સુદર્શન લાઇ મધ્યાહન કાળમાં રક્ષા કરજો.(20)

May I be protected in the morn by Kesava with his mace,May I be protected two hours later By Govinda by his flute,Two more hours later let Lord Narayana protect by his strength,And at noon let Lord Vishnu protect me his holy wheel.

देवोsपराह्णे मधुहोग्रधन्वा सायं त्रिधामावतु माधवो माम्।दोषे हृषीकेश उतार्धरात्रे निशीथ एकोsवतु पद्मनाभः ।।२१

દેવોસ્પરાહ્ણે મધુહોગ્રધન્વા સાયં ત્રિધામાવતુ માધવો મામ્। દોષે હૃષીકેશ ઉતાર્ધરાત્રે નિશીથ એકોસ્વતુ પદ્મનાભઃ ॥21॥

ઉગ્ર ધનુષ્ય ધારી મધુસુદન ભગવાન ત્રીજા પહોરે બ્રહ્મા, વિષ્ણુ, રુદ્ર એ ત્રણ મૂર્તિવાળા માધવ ભગવાન સાયનકાળે, સૂર્યાસ્ત પછી હ્યષીકેશ અને મધરાતે તથા મધરાત પહેલા એકલા પદ્મનાભ ભગવાન રક્ષા કરજો.(21)

After noon let me protected by Madhu with his great bow,In the evening Let Madhwa in the form of trinity protect me,Between dawn and midnight let Lord Hrishi kesa protect me,And at midnight let Lord Padmanabha alone protect me.

श्रीवत्सधामापररात्र ईशः प्रत्यूष ईशोऽसिधरो जनार्दनः।दामोदरोऽव्यादनुसन्ध्यं प्रभाते विश्वेश्वरो भगवान् कालमूर्तिः ।।२२

શ્રીવત્સધામાપરરાત્ર ઈશઃ પ્રત્યૂષ ઈશોઽસિધરો જનાર્દનઃ। દામોદરોઽવ્યાદનુસંધ્યં પ્રભાતે વિશ્વેશ્વરો ભગવાન્ કાલમૂર્તિઃ ॥22॥

શ્રી વત્સલાંછન શ્રી હરિ ભગવાન પાછલી રાતે, ખડધારી જનાર્દન ભગવાન ઉષાકાલ વખતે, દામોદર ભગવાન સૂર્યોદય પહેલાં અને કાળમુર્તિ વિશ્વેશ્વર ભગવાન બધી સંધ્યાઓ વખતે રક્ષા કરજો.(22)

Let me protected by remaining part of the night,By the Lord in whom Srivathsa lives,Let me be protected just before dawn,By Lord Janardhana who holds the sword,Let me be protected at sun rise,By Lord Damodara and just before morn,Let Lord Visweshwara give me protection.

चक्रं युगान्तानलतिग्मनेमि भ्रमत् समन्ताद् भगवत्प्रयुक्तम्।दन्दग्धि दन्दग्ध्यरिसैन्यमासु कक्षं यथा वातसखो हुताशः ।।२३

ચક્રં યુગાંતાનલતિગ્મનેમિ ભ્રમત્ સમંતાદ્ ભગવત્પ્રયુક્તમ્। દંદગ્ધિ દંદગ્ધ્યરિસૈન્યમાસુ કક્ષં યથા વાતસખો હુતાશઃ ॥23॥

સુદર્શન આપનો આકાર ચક્ર જેવો છે. આપની કિનારીનો ભાગ પ્રલયકાળના અગ્નિ જેવો અત્યંત તીવ્ર છે. આપ ભગવાનની પ્રેરણાથી ચોતરફ ઘૂમ્યા કરો છો. જેવી રીતે આગ વાયુની સહાયથી સૂકા ઘાસ ફુસને બાળી નાખે છે તેવી રીતે આપ અમારી શત્રુ સેનાને ધડધડાટ બાળી નાખો, બાળી નાખો.(23)

Oh holy Wheel,your edges are like the raging fire of deluge,You are sent by the God and rotate and travel everywhere,And so like the fire with the help of wind,Burns in to ashes the dried up wood of a forest,Speedily and speedily burn and burn all my enemies.

गदेऽशनिस्पर्शनविस्फुलिङ्गे निष्पिण्ढि निष्पिण्ढ्यजितप्रियासि।कूष्माण्डवैनायकयक्षरक्षोभूतग्रहांश्चूर्णय चूर्णयारीन् ।।२४

ગદેઽશનિસ્પર્શનવિસ્ફુલિંગે નિષ્પિંઢિ નિષ્પિંઢ્યજિતપ્રિયાસિ। કૂષ્માંડવૈનાયકયક્ષરક્ષોભૂતગ્રહાંશ્ચૂર્ણય ચૂર્ણયારીન્ ॥24॥

કૌમોદકી ગદા, આપમાંથી છુટતી ચીંગારીનો સ્પર્શ વજર્ જેવો અસહ્ય છે, ભગવાન અજિતની પ્રિયા છો, હું એમનો દાસ છું. તેથી આપ કુશમાંડ, વિનાયક, યક્ષ, રાક્ષસ, ભૂત અને પ્રેતાદી ગ્રહોને સડસડાટ કચરી નાખો, કચરી નાખો તથા મારા શત્રુઓને ચૂર્ણ કરી નાખો.(24)

Oh mace, the spark raising touches of yours,Are unbearable like the touch of Vajra,And you are dear to the invincible lord and his servant,And so please powder and powder again,Evil spirits, Yakshas, Rakshasas and all my enemies.

त्वं यातुधानप्रमथप्रेतमातृपिशाचविप्रग्रहघोरदृष्टीन्।दरेन्द्र विद्रावय कृष्णपूरितो भीमस्वनोऽरेर्हृदयानि कम्पयन् ।।२५

ત્વં યાતુધાનપ્રમથપ્રેતમાતૃપિશાચવિપ્રગ્રહઘોરદૃષ્ટીન્। દરેંદ્ર વિદ્રાવય કૃષ્ણપૂરિતો ભીમસ્વનોઽરેર્હૃદયાનિ કંપયન્ ॥25॥

શંખ શ્રેષ્ઠ, આપ ભગવાન શ્રી કૃષ્ણની ફૂંકથી ભયંકર અવાજ કરી મારા શત્રુઓનાં દિલ ધ્રુજાવી ડો અને યાતું ધન પ્રમથ, પ્રેમ, માતૃકા, પિશાચ તથા બ્રહ્મરાક્ષસ વગેરે ભયાનક પ્રાણીઓને અહીંથી ઝટપટ ભગાડી મુકો.(25)

Oh Conch, when Lord Krishna blows in you,You create a huge and loud Sound and confuse my enemies,And drive away ghouls, deveakhabaar, ghosts, Pramadhas,Brahma Rakshas and other fearful beings.

त्वं तिग्मधारासिवरारिसैन्यमीशप्रयुक्तो मम छिन्धि छिन्धि।चर्मञ्छतचन्द्र छादय द्विषामघोनां हर पापचक्षुषाम् २६

ત્વં તિગ્મધારાસિવરારિસૈન્યમીશપ્રયુક્તો મમ છિંધિ છિંધિ। ચર્મંછતચંદ્ર છાદય દ્વિષામઘોનાં હર પાપચક્ષુષામ્ ॥26॥

ભગવાનની પ્રિય તલવાર, આપની ધાર અત્યંત તીક્ષ્ણ છે. આપ ભગવાનની પ્રેરણાથી મારા શત્રુઓને છિન્ન ભિન્ન કરી દો. ભગવાનની વહાલી ઢાલ, આપમાં સેંકડો ચંદ્રાકાર મંડળ છે. આપ પાપ દ્રષ્ટિવાળા પાપઆત્મા શત્રુઓની આંખ બન્ધ કરી દો અને એમને સદાને માટે અંધ બનાવી દો.(26)

Oh holy sword, Be sent by the Lord himself,And cut and cut my enemy army in to pieces,Oh shield of the lord,shining like hundred moons,Please make my enemies with full of sins look blind.

यन्नो भयं ग्रहेभ्यो भूत् केतुभ्यो नृभ्य एव च।सरीसृपेभ्यो दंष्ट्रिभ्यो भूतेभ्योंऽहोभ्य एव वा ।।२७

सर्वाण्येतानि भगन्नामरूपास्त्रकीर्तनात्।प्रयान्तु संक्षयं सद्यो ये नः श्रेयः प्रतीपकाः ।।२८

યન્નો ભયં ગ્રહેભ્યો ભૂત્ કેતુભ્યો નૃભ્ય એવ ચ। સરીસૃપેભ્યો દંષ્ટ્રિભ્યો ભૂતેભ્યોંઽહોભ્ય એવ વા ॥27॥

સર્વાણ્યેતાનિ ભગન્નામરૂપાસ્ત્રકીર્તનાત્। પ્રયાંતુ સંક્ષયં સદ્યો યે નઃ શ્રેયઃ પ્રતીપકાઃ ॥28॥

સૂર્ય વગેરે ગ્રહ, ધૂમકેતુ વગેરે કેતુ, દુષ્ટ મનુષ્યો, સર્પ વગેરે પેટે ચાલનારા જંતુઓ, દાઢવાળા હિંસક પશુ, ભૂત-પ્રેત વગેરે તથા પાપી પ્રાણીઓથી અમને જે જે ભય હોઈ અને જે જે અમારા મંગલના વિરોધી હોય તે બધા ભગવાનના નામ, રૂપ અને આયુધના કીર્તન કરવાથી તત્કાળ નાશ પામે.(28)

The fear that we have due to planets, comets, Kethu and kings,The fear that we had from teethed serpents, ghosts and from sin,And the fear that prevent our well being may all be destroyed,Oh God, by the praise of your names and weapons.

गरूड़ो भगवान् स्तोत्रस्तोभश्छन्दोमयः प्रभुः।रक्षत्वशेषकृच्छ्रेभ्यो विष्वक्सेनः स्वनामभिः ।।२९

ગરૂડ્ક્ષો ભગવાન્ સ્તોત્રસ્તોભશ્છંદોમયઃ પ્રભુઃ। રક્ષત્વશેષકૃચ્છ્રેભ્યો વિષ્વક્સેનઃ સ્વનામભિઃ ॥29॥

બૃહદ્દરથન્તર આદિ સંવેદના સ્તોત્રોથી જેમની સ્તુતિ કરવામાં આવે છે, તે વેદમૂર્તિ ભગવાન ગરુડ અને વિશ્વકસેનજી પોતાના નામોચ્ચારણના પ્રભાવથી અમને બધા પ્રકારની વિપતિઓથી બચાવે.(29)

The Garuda, who is being praised by great musical stotras of Vedas,Who is a god and the lord of the world, may protect me from all troubles,By singing of his names as well as that of the Lord Vishwak sena.

सर्वापद्भ्यो हरेर्नामरूपयानायुधानि नः।बुद्धिन्द्रियमनः प्राणान् पान्तु पार्षदभूषणाः ।।३०

સર્વાપદ્ભ્યો હરેર્નામરૂપયાનાયુધાનિ નઃ। બુદ્ધિંદ્રિયમનઃ પ્રાણાન્ પાંતુ પાર્ષદભૂષણાઃ ॥30॥

શ્રી હરિનાં નામ, રૂપ, વાહન, આયુધ અને શેષ્ઠ પાર્ષદ અમારી બુદ્ધિ, ઇન્દ્રિય, મન અને પ્રાણોને બધા પ્રકારની આપતિઓથી ઉગારી લે.(30)

Let the names and forms of Vishnu, his steed,His weapons, and important assistants may protect,My mind, senses and soul, from all the dangers and sins.

यथा हि भगवानेव वस्तुतः सद्सच्च यत्।सत्यनानेन नः सर्वे यान्तु नाशमुपाद्रवाः ।।३१

યથા હિ ભગવાનેવ વસ્તુતઃ સદ્સચ્ચ યત્। સત્યનાનેન નઃ સર્વે યાંતુ નાશમુપાદ્રવાઃ ॥31॥

સઘળું જગત ખરી રીતે ભગવાનનું જ સ્વરૂપ છે.સત્યથી અમારા સઘળા ઉપદ્રવ નાશ પામો.(31)

The truth that God is all beings and things,May destroy all the troubles that we face.

यथैकात्म्यानुभावानां विकल्परहितः स्वयम्।भूषणायुद्धलिङ्गाख्या धत्ते शक्तीः स्वमायया ।।३२

યથૈકાત્મ્યાનુભાવાનાં વિકલ્પરહિતઃ સ્વયમ્। ભૂષણાયુદ્ધલિંગાખ્યા ધત્તે શક્તીઃ સ્વમાયયા ॥32॥

અભેદ દૃષ્ટિવાળાઓને ભગવાન ભેદ રહિત છે તો પણ એ પોતાની માયાથી ભૂષણ, આયુધ અને રૂપ નામની શક્તિઓથી ધારણ કરે છે એ વાત નિશ્ચિત રૂપથી ખરી છે.(32)

Those great savants who think, that God does not have any forms,And his weapons and ornaments are only Symbols without power,

तेनैव सत्यमानेन सर्वज्ञो भगवान् हरिः।पातु सर्वैः स्वरूपैर्नः सदा सर्वत्र सर्वगः ।।३३

તેનૈવ સત્યમાનેન સર્વજ્ઞો ભગવાન્ હરિઃ। પાતુ સર્વૈઃ સ્વરૂપૈર્નઃ સદા સર્વત્ર સર્વગઃ ॥33

તો એ સત્ય અનુસાર સર્વજ્ઞ સર્વ વ્યાપક ભગવાન શ્રી હરિ સર્વ સ્વરૂપો વડે સર્વ કાળમાં અને સર્વ દેશમાં અમારી રક્ષા કરો.(33)

And due to this truth, the God Hari is everywhere,And let him protect me always and everywhere.

विदिक्षु दिक्षूर्ध्वमधः समन्तादन्तर्बहिर्भगवान् नारसिंहः।प्रहापयँल्लोकभयं स्वनेन ग्रस्तसमस्ततेजाः ।।३४

વિદિક્ષુ દિક્ષૂર્ધ્વમધઃ સમંતાદંતર્બહિર્ભગવાન્ નારસિંહઃ। પ્રહાપય~ંલ્લોકભયં સ્વનેન ગ્રસ્તસમસ્તતેજાઃ ॥34॥

જેના નામની ગર્જનાથી નૃસિંહ ભગવાન લોકોના ભયને મટાડે છે અને જેના પ્રભાવથી પ્રહલાદજી ઝેર વગેરે સર્વના સામર્થ્યને ગળી જાય છે. તેવા તે દિશાઓમાં, ખૂણાઓમાં, ઊંચે, નીચે, અંદર, બહાર અને ચારે બાજુએ અમારી રક્ષા કરો.(34)

Let the Lord Narasimha who due to his power,Destroyed elephants, serpents and other beingsAnd saved Prahladha, and removed the fear of the world,,Protect me in all directions and non directions,Top and below, inside and outside and in all places.

मघवन्निदमाख्यातं वर्म नारयणात्मकम्।विजेष्यस्यञ्जसा येन दंशितोऽसुरयूथपान् ।।३५

મઘવન્નિદમાખ્યાતં વર્મ નારયણાત્મકમ્। વિજેષ્યસ્યંજસા યેન દંશિતોઽસુરયૂથપાન્ ॥35॥

વિશ્વરૂપે કહ્યું : હે ઇન્દ્ર ! મેં તને આ ‘ નારાયણ કવચ ‘ કહ્યું તે પાઠ કરી લે. પછી તું મોટા મોટા દૈત્યને વગર પરિશ્રમે જીતી શકીશ.(35)

Oh Indra, thus I have told you, the great armour of Narayana,And using this you protect yourselves and easily,Defeat the commanders of the army of Rakshasas.

एतद् धारयमाणस्तु यं यं पश्यति चक्षुषा।पदा वा संस्पृशेत् सद्यः साध्वसात् स विमुच्यते ।।३६

એતદ્ ધારયમાણસ્તુ યં યં પશ્યતિ ચક્ષુષા। પદા વા સંસ્પૃશેત્ સદ્યઃ સાધ્વસાત્ સ વિમુચ્યતે ॥36॥

આ કવચને ધારણ કરનાર પુરુષ જેની પણ સામું જુએ કે જેનો પગથી સ્પર્શ કરે, તે પણ સમસ્ત ભયથી મુક્ત થઈ જાય છે.(36)

If he who wears his armour sees any one by his eyes,Or even touches him by his feet, that man,Would be able to get rid of all his fears.

न कुतश्चित भयं तस्य विद्यां धारयतो भवेत्।राजदस्युग्रहादिभ्यो व्याघ्रादिभ्यश्च कर्हिचित् ।।३७

ન કુતશ્ચિત ભયં તસ્ય વિદ્યાં ધારયતો ભવેત્। રાજદસ્યુગ્રહાદિભ્યો વ્યાઘ્રાદિભ્યશ્ચ કર્હિચિત્ ॥37॥

આ વૈષ્ણવી વિદ્યા ધારણ કરનારા પુરુષને રાજા, ચોર, ગ્રહ કે વાઘ આદિ હિંસક પશુઓથી કદી ભય થતો નથી.(37)

He who wears this armour will never have any fear,From king, enemies, planets and animals like the tiger.

इमां विद्यां पुरा कश्चित् कौशिको धारयन् द्विजः।योगधारणया स्वाङ्गं जहौ स मरूधन्वनि ।।३८

ઇમાં વિદ્યાં પુરા કશ્ચિત્ કૌશિકો ધારયન્ દ્વિજઃ। યોગધારણયા સ્વાંગં જહૌ સ મરૂધન્વનિ ॥38॥

પ્રાચીન કાળમાં આ વિદ્યાને ધારણ કરનાર કોઈ કૌશિક ગૌત્રના બ્રાહ્મણે આ વિદ્યા ધારણ કરી યોગ ધારણાંથી નિર્જન દેશમાં પોતાનો દેહ છોડેલો.(38)

Long time ago, this knowledge was worn by a Brahmin,From Koushika Gothra and he gave up his life in a desert.

तस्योपरि विमानेन गन्धर्वपतिरेकदा।ययौ चित्ररथः स्त्रीर्भिवृतो यत्र द्विजक्षयः ।।३९

गगनान्न्यपतत् सद्यः सविमानो ह्यवाक् शिराः।स वालखिल्यवचनादस्थीन्यादाय विस्मितः।प्रास्य प्राचीसरस्वत्यां स्नात्वा धाम स्वमन्वगात् ।।४०

તસ્યોપરિ વિમાનેન ગંધર્વપતિરેકદા। યયૌ ચિત્રરથઃ સ્ત્રીર્ભિવૃતો યત્ર દ્વિજક્ષયઃ ॥39॥

ગગનાન્ન્યપતત્ સદ્યઃ સવિમાનો હ્યવાક્ શિરાઃ। સ વાલખિલ્યવચનાદસ્થીન્યાદાય વિસ્મિતઃ।

પ્રાસ્ય પ્રાચીસરસ્વત્યાં સ્નાત્વા ધામ સ્વમન્વગાત્ ॥40॥

એક દિવસ પોતાની સ્ત્રીઓ સાથે ગંધર્વોનો અધિપતિ ચિત્રરથ વિમાનમાં બેસીને આકાશમાં જતો હતો. તે જ્યાં બ્રાહ્મણનો દેહ પડ્યો હતો ત્યાં ઉપર આવતા તુરંત વિમાન સહિત ઊંધે માથે પૃથ્વી ઉપર પડ્યો. આ ઘટનાથી એના આશ્ચર્યની સીમા ન રહી, જ્યારે વાલખીલ્ય મુનિઓએ એને સમજાવ્યું કે આ ‘ નારાયણ કવચ ‘  ધારણ કરવાનો પ્રભાવ છે.ત્યારે ચિત્રરથ આ બ્રાહ્મણના અસ્થિને ઉપાડી પ્રાચી-સરસ્વતીમાં વહાવી દીધા અને પછી એ સ્નાન કરી પોતાના લોકમાં ગયો.(39)(40)

A gandharwa called Chithra radha was travelling in a plane.Along with his ladies, where the Brahmins body was lying.At that spot his plane stopped and he fell there along with his ladies,And he was perplexed and was advised by the sages called Balakhilya,And obeying their advice, took the bones of the Brahmin,And put it in the river Saraswathi, took bath and went back to his home.

॥શ્રીશુક ઉવાચ॥

य इदं शृणुयात् काले यो धारयति चादृतः।तं नमस्यन्ति भूतानि मुच्यते सर्वतो भयात् ।।४१

ય ઇદં શૃણુયાત્ કાલે યો ધારયતિ ચાદૃતઃ। તં નમસ્યંતિ ભૂતાનિ મુચ્યતે સર્વતો ભયાત્ ॥41॥

શ્રી શુકદેવજીએ કહ્યું : જે માણસ આ ‘ નારાયણ કવચ ‘ ને યોગ્ય સમયમાં આદર સહિત સાંભળે ક ધારણ કરે તેની સામે બધા પ્રાણીઓ આદરથી નમી પડે છે અને તે બધી જાતનાં ભયથી મુક્ત થઈ જાય છે.(41)

He who wears or hears this armour of Narayana,Would be saluted by all beings and he would get rid of all fears.

एतां विद्यामधिगतो विश्वरूपाच्छतक्रतुः।त्रैलोक्यलक्ष्मीं बुभुजे विनिर्जित्यऽमृधेसुरान् ।।४२

એતાં વિદ્યામધિગતો વિશ્વરૂપાચ્છતક્રતુઃ। ત્રૈલોક્યલક્ષ્મીં બુભુજે વિનિર્જિત્યઽમૃધેસુરાન્ ॥42॥

હે પરીક્ષિત વિશ્વરૂપ પાસેથી આ વિદ્યા પ્રાપ્ત કરી ઇન્દ્રદેવે દૈત્યોને જીતી, ત્રેઈલોકયનું રાજ્ય ભોગવ્યું.(42)

Learning this knowledge from Viswaroopa, Indra,Won in the battle over all asuras and,Got the blessings of wealth of the three worlds,

।।इति श्रीनारायणकवचं सम्पूर्णम्।।( श्रीमद्भागवत स्कन्ध 6 , अ। 8 )
