Neena Gupta is an Indian actress and television director who is known for acting in films and television serials. She was born on 4th June 1959 in Calcutta, India to R.N.Gupta and Shakuntala Devi. Her father was an LLB and an officer in the State Trading Corporation of India and her mother was a former teacher with double master’s degrees in Sanskrit and Political Science. She had one brother, Pankaj Gupta, and two half-brothers from her father’s second marriage. She did her schooling at Bal Bharti School and Vidya Bhawan. She did her BA from Janki Devi Mahavidyalaya and MA in Sanskrit from Delhi University. Later she earned an MPhil from Delhi University. During her University period, she joined theatre. Later she joined the National School of Drama.

Neena started her acting in 1982 with Saath Saath. In that year, she was also seen in five films. In 1983, she appeared in two films, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron and Mandi. Her performance in Janne Bhi Do Yaaron was praised. Utsav and Laila were her two released films in 1984. From 1985 to 1993, she starred in several films, such as Trikaal (1985), Taniya (1987), The Deceivers(1988), Batwara (1989), Sward (1990), Vasthuhara (1991, Malayalam film debut), Balwaan (1992), Khalnayak (1993) etc. In 1994, Neena acted in the film, Woh Chokri. One of the most successful films Neena. She gained popularity and marked her breakthrough performance with it. She won a National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for her acting.

In the following years, from 1995 to 2015, she appeared in several films, such as Dushmani: A Violent Love Story (1995), and Uff! Yeh Mohabbat (1997), Cotton Mary (1999), Raat Ke Saudagar (2002), Meri Biwi Ka Jawaab Nahin (2004), Nazar (2005), The White Elephant (2009), Veer (2010), Mere Dost Picture Abhi Baaki Hai (2012), Issaq (2013), Alone (2015) etc. In 2018, Neena appeared in three films, Veere Di Wedding, Mulk and Badhaai Ho. But her performance in Badhaai Ho was highly acclaimed and he won several accolades including the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress, the Screen Award for Best Actress (Critics), and the BFJA Award for Best Supporting Actor – Female. In 2019, he was seen in two films. Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan and Panga were her two released films in 2020. For her performance in Subh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, she was nominated for Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. She had five releases in 2023.
